Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs In the time we already spend driving to work, we can get the exercise we need but "don't have time for" by commuting by bicycle. Commuting to work by bike or for short trip neighborhood errands is a great way to get fit and stay healthy. Combined with transit, cycling can also be part of a commute over longer distances. Most of the terrain in the Sacramento Valley is generally flat and travel distances within our communities are relatively short. The weather throughout most of the year is also conducive to bicycling and walking. Besides having fun and getting healthier, bicycling can help to improve our air quality and reduce traffic congestion. The bicycle is the most energy-efficient form of travel so it reduces energy use, our dependence on fossil fuels, and emissions of greenhouse gases. Bicycling is a great commute alternative. Even just a day or two a week is a great way to save money, get some exercise and be kind to the environment. The District supports and promotes bicycle and pedestrian programs and projects through our Clean Air Fund program through which, the District assists in funding projects for many local jurisdictions and UC Davis. Examples of projects the District has provided funding for are the Davis-Dixon and Dixon-Vacaville Bikeways, Yolo County Roads 99, 29 and Road 99D Bikeways between Woodland and Davis; the Alamo Creek, Ulatis Creek, Centennial and Nob Hill Bike Paths in the City of Vacaville; a waterfront bike and pedestrian path and bicycle parking facilities for the City of Rio Vista; programs supporting the Solano Transportation Authority’s Safe Routes to School Program and bicycle parking facilities for UC Davis, the Cities of Woodland, Winters, and West Sacramento, Explorit Science Center, YCTD transit stops and the Davis Amtrak Station. The District also hosts local bicycle and pedestrian coordinator meetings at the District office and is represented on the SACOG Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, STA’s Safe Routes to School Advisory Committee and Bicycle Advisory Committee.
